Objective: Parkinson?s disease does not recognize etiology, but several risk factors have been incriminated. We evaluated
factors of occupational and environmental risk in the occurrence of Parkinson?s disease.
Method: A case-control study was conducted over a period of 14 months from October 1st 2012 to December 31st 2013. The
determination of risk factors was made by logistic regression by calculating odds ratios(OR). Cases and controls were matched
by sex and age.
Results and Discussion: 128 Parkinson?s disease patients and 176 controls were recruited. The mean age was 63.79±10.77 years,
with 67 men and 52 women among the cases. A significant difference between Parkinson?s disease patients and control subjects
was found for family history of Parkinson?s disease [OR=7.03 (2.32 to 21.34), p=0.0015], consumption of well water [OR=1.85
(1.12 to 3.05) p=0.015], exposure to pesticides [OR=10.24 (4.15 to 25.30),p=0.0001] and work in agriculture [OR=2.87 (1.62
to 5.09),p=0.0001].
Conclusion: Preliminary results of this study revealed four risk factors of Parkinson?s disease viz., pesticideexposure, work in
agriculture, drinking water wells and family history of Parkinson?s disease.
