Biography

Dr. Chuanyao Tong was born and raised in Shanghai, China. Graduated from Fudang University (former Shanghai Medical University) in 1983, received resident training in both surgery and anesthesia. In 1989, he did postdoctoral training in the anesthesia department of Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and became research faculty in 1991. He Passed NBME in 1995 and started anesthesia resident in North Carolina Baptist Hospital 996-2000, and stayed on as faculty since then. His clinical interests are neurosurgical anesthesia, trauma, vascular, and urogynecological anesthesia. Meanwhile, his research was to understand the neurophysiology of labor, and to develop an animal model for labor pain in rats, which received funding from FAER/ASA (Foundation of Anesthesia Education and Research, 2002-2004), and NIHRO1 (2004-2008). He was working in the Pain Mechanism Lab lead by James C. Eisenach at Wake Forest University Medical Center; meanwhile he was co-investigator in cooperation with colleagues interested in pain research.
