Biography

Dr. Rita B. Merman was born in a small town in the country of Belarus in 1962. She spent her childhood in a historical region of Polotsk, Belarus. She received her medical degree at the Minsk Medical School. Due to poor socio-economic climates, she decided to leave the country in pursuit of a better life in a free nation. The immigration process was not easy. It was through the support of her husband, a music composer, and her son that she was able to complete all three necessary USMLE steps within the span of a year. During residency, she did a year of preliminary surgery, which was extremely difficult but also very rewarding and beneficial. After finishing her anesthesiology residency at UAMS, she began her career as an anesthesiologist at UPMC. There she has been a pivotal part in constructing the biggest regional fellowship program in the United States since day one. Her roles there consist of clinical work, teaching, research and administrative duties.
